The research of the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology are aimed at analyzing the phenomena occurring in crop species under the influence of abiotic and biotic stresses at the basic level, identifying and developing dependencies of factors determining the occurrence of phenomena, developing their mechanisms and indicating the possibility of using the acquired knowledge in practice.


  1. Research in the field of experimental embryology and somatic embryogenesis. Understanding the physiological, cytogenetic, biochemical, metabolite, genetic, epigenetic and transcription-translational processes at the in vitro cultures that favor plant regeneration. The study of the role of abiotic factors (such as light or metal ions, metabolites, etc.) on plant regeneration at the cellular level manifested in regenerants and inherited in generative cycles. Developing, on the basis of theoretical foundations of the functioning of in vitro cultures, efficient methods of crop plant regeneration as an important tool for basic research and agricultural practice.
  2. Development of the theoretical foundations of broadly understood heterosis in utility plants with particular emphasis on the phenomena occurring in the cytoplasmic-nuclear systems of male sterility on the example of cereals. Searching for theoretical and practical models of the phenomenon. Development of efficient methods for selecting plant materials.
  3. Improving research methods for the cultivation of crops, developing a molecular bioinformatics platform.
  4. Study of the morphological, physiological and genetic conditions of agricultural plants (including resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses) and the population of economically important fungal pathogens of utility plants.
